                                              Edmund de Wind

Edmund de Wind born in December 1883, was educated at Campbell College (1895-1900) and then worked for the Bank of Ireland before emigrating to Canada in 1911.  When the First World War erupted he enlisted in the Canadian forces.  During the war through Comber family connections with the Andrews family, he obtained a commission in late 1917, being posted to the 36th Ulster Division.  He was on the very front line of the Western Front when the Germans began their final counter – offensive on the 21st March 1918.  He died at the end of that day, and having held an impossible position, was awarded the Victorious Cross for 'conspicuous bravery and self – sacrifice'.  In addition to the usual memorials, Edmund has a mountain named after him in Alberta, Canada.
