Sammy Haire would have loved this weekend at The Green and at Stormont watching his club in action. It was not to be as Sammy died peacefully in hospital on Sunday at 6pm.
Sammy never played cricket, but in the early 80s he became one of the Union's most highly respected groundsmen and spent many hours making The Green one of the best grounds in the country – a reputation that is carried on to this day.
He watched the development and talent of son Robin with great pride and then followed the exploits of grandsons Ryan and Andrew with a similar devotion.
He basked in their glories and suffered with their setbacks.
Sammy became President of the club in 1995 and Patron in 2004 a position he held until his death.
His generosity to the club is well known but his enduring legacy will be that of the quiet, pleasant gentleman who had time for everyone.
He will be sorely missed.
