FIRSTS GO TOP OF LEAGUE

Sunday 8 August 2010

BIG GUNS OR DAMP SQUIBS (See RESULTS and LEAGUE TABLE sections)

Billed as one of the top games of the season, this encounter petered out before the drinks interval in the second innings.

Toss won, the home side batted and surpassed their Cup Final score by 3 runs losing one more wicket. 265 for 7.

30 for 2 wasn't the start wished for with Neil Russell playing on, bowled by Heasley, and Andrew Sutherland epitomising the game of cricket as he was sadly run out for 20 after his stunning 130 the previous day.

Ryan Haire might have felt that he had to post a substantial score after Sutherland's exit, and he didn't disappoint his team or the local supporters.  His 4 fours and 4 sixes in a score of 93, pushed Haire beyond the magical 1000 runs for the season - 1036 exactly with 6 games left.

Taimur Khan was caught behind the wicket for 22 bringing Jonny Terrett to the wicket. His previous day first ball dismissal didn't affect him, as he, with Haire, added 77 for the 4th wicket and added 50 with Shields for the 5th wicket.  He was easily run out for 68 in the chase for runs with Daniel Harding added 39.

Again the CIYMS reply needed a good start but Harding bowled Gelston and Cooper edged a Gavin McKenna delivery to the wicketkeeper, and CI were 15 for 2. Heasley was caught by Sutherland off Khan and Shields caught McCord off Marty Moreland's bowling to leave the visitors in big trouble at 58 for 4.

In the meantime Craig McMillan hit McKenna for  a great straight six and a classy 'four' and there were expectations that an onslaught was imminent.

It was not to be, as his last 19 runs came in singles as he watched a very inept CI batting performance at the 'other end'

79 for 5 quickly became 90 all out as Khan claimed 6 for 29 in a devastating spell.

This win takes North Down to the top of the Premier League with 6 games to play.
