Malan and Mulder Star in Ulster Cup Win

Typical of this summer, the weather played a vital part in determining the outcome of a game that promised an exciting finish.

At the conclusion, the momentum was with the home side and that in effect brought the trophy to The Green.

This turn of the tide was critical as Instonians had powered their way to a plus 61 on the Duckworth Lewis chart in the early stages of an innings set on fire by Neil Russell and his belligerent striking.

On 47 he hammered a ball back to the bowler, Jacob Mulder, who held on and gave the vital breakthrough.

Marty Moreland's first two overs had gone for 21 runs but undeterred and a lot to prove he bowled a third and claimed the prize wicket of Andrew White.

Mulder bowled Nikolai Smith and, as the skies darkened and the met office forecast was about to be fulfilled, Moreland struck again with Peter Shields catching Farhad Iqbal behind the wicket.

With the brilliant spells of bowling from Mulder, 7.5 overs 2 for 14, and Moreland, 7 overs 2 for 28 the DL reading came down in favour of North Down.

At the start of the match Andrew Sutherland (38) and Danny Graham (43) had given the home side a good foundation in the face of good bowling and fielding from the visitors.

Pieter Malan 'put the icing on the cake' with a quite brilliant 98 not out off 63 deliveries and the total of 233 was reached.
