This is a very sad time for North Down Cricket Club with the death of our Patron, Derek Steen.
From the early 70s Derek fulfilled many roles from the coach of our boys' team to the guiding and very popular Chairman from '82 until '87.
He showed early promise as a young cricketer when he opened the bowling for Leinster schools against Ulster and took 5 wickets for 27 runs in 1954.
At The Green he played mostly for a 3rd eleven that he led as a shrewd captain to league and cup honours and scored plenty of runs on the way, but it was his genial personality and sociable attributes that won him many friends. He loved his cricket and played on league winning 4th elevens and midweek sides.
He was instrumental in securing sponsorship for the Barbados tour in '84 which he managed and was an astute Bar Manager and helped set the club on a sound financial footing at an important time.
Known affectionately as 'Jock' or 'the Gaffer' by his team mates, Derek, who had suffered from ill health for a number of years, still visited The Green and sponsored matches this season.
Through his love of the game and his drive he was instrumental in laying the foundation for the great success that followed his playing days and he will always be thought off with great affection especially by those who played with him and against him.
Our thoughts are with Shirley, Stephen and the family circle.
