Monday 12th June 2017
North Down played Phoenix CC on the 11th June for the fifth time in the history of the Irish Senior Cup. Here's what happened in those games.
2nd Round v Phoenix at ‘The Green’
The holders of the Irish Cup came to ‘The Green’ on the 3rd July favourites to win but with Ian Shields(20) and Raman Lamba putting on 80 for the first wicket it was not going to be easy for Phoenix. The combination of Irish Internationals, Michael Halliday and Alf Masood accounted for John Gilliland 10 runs later, but an eighty runs partnership between Lamba and Robin Haire laid the foundation for a big total.. But it was not to be; Lamba was caught on 95 and Haire on 40 and from 178 for 3 the team slumped to 208 all out. Gordon Black returned figures of 4 for 44 and Freer 3 for 41 and the holders were in with a good chance.
John Gilliland 3 for 20
Lamba bowled David Pigot (Snr) for 3 and D Billy Dale trapped Taylor lbw before he had scored and at 9 for 3 the home side’s total looked more defendable. Alf Masood (54) had other ideas and he featured in a threatening partnership with current ICU President Stan Mitchell (44). With the total on 111 Mitchell was bowled by Ian Carser and the outcome of the game fell to Masood. When he was bowled by John Gilliland, seventh man out the Phoenix resistance crumbled and they fell 48 runs short. Lamba’s 3 for 19; Gilliland’s 3 for 20 and Carser’s 2 for 35 were commendable performances but Billy Dale and Jimmy Galway bowled economically while Robin Haire went for 31 off his 5 overs.
2nd Round v Phoenix at Phoenix Park
This was to be a big challenge for the visitors, playing against a well respected, in form Dublin team. North Down inserted the home side and saw J Bray (84) and D Pigot (16) add 72 for the first wicket before Paul Davidson bowled Pigot. Davidson struck again eight runs later having I Masood (6) caught behind by Peter Shields and J Carnegie being held by Billy Adams for a ‘duck’. Davidson’s great spell finished twenty-five runs later with Phoenix 125 for 4 as he saw A Bhandari well stumped for 26. Davidson had torn the heart out of the home sides batting with 4 for 31 in his 10 over spell. Phoenix finished with a flourish from J Atkinson (28 not out) and totalled 184 for 7 in their 50 overs.
Paul Davidson 4 for 31
Jo Montgomery (8) and Andrew White (5) left the total at 22 for 2 and made 184 look a much bigger target and the visitors were struggling. It needed and got a big partnership between Robin Haire (41) and Peter Shields (56) and when Shields was the fourth wicket down North Down were 40 runs short of victory. Ryan Haire remained not out on 35 with David Moreland not out 1, although Michael Quinn, Marty Moreland and Paul Davidson had all departed. A great 3-wicket victory and a 3rd round draw in prospect.
2nd Round v Phoenix at Phoenix Park on June 16th
This game was played without the Haires and North Down struggled when put in on a wet wicket that offered plenty for the bowlers. Only David Kennedy’s 41 and a late Michael Turkington 58 run cameo batting at number seven, enabled the visitors to reach 180. R Flanagan took 5 for 25 in his 10 overs and then opened the batting contributing 35. At 43 for 3 the game was in the balance but a 73 not out G Ancher and an unbeaten 36 from D Langford – Smith sealed it for the home side. Taimur took 2 for 20 but it was yet another bad day in the elusive Irish Senior Cup.
