North Down v Instonians at The Green

Last Saturday, 24th June, North Down, as league leaders, entertained one of this year’s favourites for league honours, Instonians.

Perhaps the early start at 11 am and the conditions likely to assist the bowler led the North Down captain Marty Moreland to insert the visitors when he won the toss.

Inst. Opener James Shannon who scored 87, as is his custom at The Green, almost ran out of support as wickets fell around him.

Eventually he found a supporting role from Nathan Smith who finished on 57 not out.

There was nothing else in the batting that bothered the home attack and leg break bowler Carl Robinson took 3 for 36, Marty Moreland 2 for 33, Ruan Pretorius 2 for 55 and Peter Eakin 1 for 35.

The North Down target was a modest 208

There was a solid start from openers Danny Graham and  Nathan Burns before the latter fell to a great catch by Nickolai Smith for 22.

Graham threatened another 50 but was out for 31 with a mistimed pull.

Ali Shields was the key to the victory as he displayed the full range of shots with excellent timing and patience when needed and totally dominated the bowling.

Ruan Pretorius lost patience with the persistent accuracy of Nathan Smith, the pick of the Instonians bowlers, and was well caught by Andrew White at slip.

Smith bowled 4 maidens in his 10 over spell and took 2 for 34.

Peter Eakin added an important 23 and Shields 98 not out and the experienced Neil Russell 16 not out got the team over the line.

North Down unofficial Man of the Match was Ali Shields.
